Frequently Asked Questions
What are microgreens?
Microgreens are seedlings of edible vegetables and herbs that are approximately 3-5 inches tall. They have an aromatic flavor and concentrated nutrient content, and come in a variety of colors and textures. They often contain larger amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than their more mature counterparts. Popular microgreens are peas, broccoli, kale, arugula, and beets.
How are microgreens different from sprouts?Microgreens and sprouts have distinct differences, though often confused as one. Both are grown from the same seeds but sprouts are generally harvested approximately 3-5 days after sowing, while microgreens after 8-12 days. Sprouts are shorter in length at 1-2 inches, while microgreens grow between 3-5 inches in length. But the most significant difference is in the appearance, flavor, and nutrient values between the two. Microgreens come in vibrant colors, and have the first set of true leaves formed, resulting in stronger flavors and a higher nutritional profile. Sprouts are germinated seeds, which have not yet developed a pronounced appearance, flavor, or nutrient density. Sprouts can be a source of food borne illnesses when consumed raw, as they grow in a damp, poorly ventilated, and low light environment. While microgreens have fewer health concerns as they are grown in a well ventilated environment, which is exposed to optimal light.
How can I incorporate microgreens in my diet?Microgreens don’t only add color to your dishes as a garnish, but they’re also great in juices, smoothies, and salads. There are several microgreen varieties, which can make it confusing to select a starting option. Hence, we have especially created the Hodge Podge box for beginners, as well as for microgreen connoisseurs. The Hodge Podge box has approximately 8 oz. of microgreens, making it a great salad replacement, which should last 2-3 times a week.
Which microgreens are present in the Hodge Podge box?
The Hodge Podge box has a blend of nine or more microgreens. The blend contains – broccoli, kale, red acre cabbage, purple kohlrabi, wasabi, arugula, rambo radish, bull’s blood beets, and speckled peas.
What are the benefits of consuming microgreens?
By adding microgreens to your diet on a consistent basis, you can help to improve your overall health. Microgreens contain concentrated antioxidants in the form of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, enzymes, and plant pigments. These are our first line of defense against free radical damage and toxic build up. Unfortunately, most of the foods we consume are depleted in these essential nutrients. Eating microgreens regularly is the best way to heal your body, reverse the damage that has been done and protect against future damage.
